Waterloo - A visit to the museum

Hi again,

last weekend three friends and I made a tour to the battlefields of WorldWar I  and also to the battlefield of Waterloo. Waterloo was our last station of the tour. In the evenings we always had a game dealing with the battlefield we visited on the certain day. So we also had a game about Waterloo using the board game of "Command and Colors". It is really interesting to see the places the battles took place in reality. It is easier to get a feeling about the scenarios of the games then.

Here are a lot of pictures taken at the museum of Waterloo. Hope you like them.

If you are visiting the museum of Waterloo you also should use the shuttle to Hougoumont. Within Hougoumont you can see a film that is really worth to look at. For me visiting Hougoumont has been the highlight of the museum.

Cheers

Mike

Also interesting - the Expo about ABBA. But  we didn´t visit that though it might have been very interesting.

There are three dioramas in the entrance made with model soldiers in 1/72 scale.

Two smaller ones...

... and a big one.

The next pictures show some images of the panorama-painting next to the museum. It deals with the French cavalry charge led by Marshal Ney on the British infantry.

On the top of the monument you can overview the former battlefield with a map showing the positions of the opposing armies.

In this "camp" are held some shows dealing with firing of an artillery and things like that. Unfortunately we missed the time of this program.

There is a shuttle to Hougoumont that we used to get there. And this guy gave us some very interesting information about the fierce fighting that took place here.

This model could be in scale 1/56 - so it would fit to our 28mm figures.

The French coming through the doorway.

The door itself. It was on the other side of the great door there the main fight took place.

And a monument.

The main fight took place here - led by Napoleon´s brother Jerome.

These trees are the only survivors of the battle - still having bullets inside them.

Interesting to know that the bullets used by the British had been a little bit bigger than the French ones. So the French could not reuse the British bullets for they did not fit into their muskets, but the British could have used the French bullets.

Some damages of bullets can be seen on the walls.

A bullets used for canister shooting of the artillery. The guns was filled with about 30-40  of them and shot at the enemiy.
